On a recent visit to a Northern Territory WW11 Coast watch memorial.
Timber Creek lies south of Darwin and west of Katherine heading towards the Western Australian border town of Kununurra.
The lookout displays the story of these tough Australians, protecting their country in extremely tough conditions.
The thread was picked up by a Goondiwindi local identity with a direct family connection.
Warren Thatcher:
Dad and his friend Lance Mac Smith were on listening posts on the Victoria river for a while in WW2.
They rode horses from Darwin to Timber Creek.
Horse riding, horse breaking, crocodile shooting and handling the king tide with a boat.
Our car trip took 7 hours at 120 legal limit driving with air con, one can only imagine the difficulties and hardships they faced in riding to their posts, in the heat and mosquitoes.
And don't forget the crocodiles at every stretch of water and land these men crossed.
The story lies in the following plaques displayed at the memorial.
